Semantography (World Writing): the inspiration
Charles maintained that until he started living in Shanghai he never thought about creating a symbolic writing. It never occurred to him that it might be an antidote to the conflicts, pogroms and discrimination he experienced.
When Charles arrived in Shanghai the concept of a symbolic language had not occurred to him. Initially he was focussed on getting Claire to Shanghai and finding a way to survive. While in Shanghai Charles made three observations that started him on a journey that was to consume him for the rest of his life.
